Menzies Community School encourages all staff, students and community members to have pride in themselves and their school. Our values of Belonging, Achievement and Respect are central to all school pursuits, including the way in which our students are dressed.
All students are expected to abide by the dress code in class, on the sports field, at incursions and on excursions, unless otherwise directed by a staff member. The co-operation of parents and carers is requested in ensuring that students are dressed appropriately in school uniform at all times.
School Uniform
The following uniform items are available for purchase from the school office:
Clothing made from denim is not permitted as part of the school uniform, in accordance with the Department of Education Dress Codes for Students in Public Schools Policy.
Hair
Long hair must be tied back at all times to avoid the spread of head lice. Fringes must be above eye level to ensure clarity of vision. Hair clips are an acceptable solution during class time.
Footwear
Flat-soled shoes that enclose the feet are required at all times. Thongs and slip-on sandals are not permitted. Parents and carers should ensure students have appropriate footwear for Sport and Physical Education.
Hats
A broad-brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat must be worn throughout the year to protect against UV radiation, in line with the school's SunSmart Sun Protection Policy. Peaked caps are not considered sun protective and are not permitted.
Make-up
Make-up is not to be worn, except for foundation.
Jewellery
Minimum jewellery is permitted, including watches, plain small sleepers and studs. Any religious emblems on chains must be worn inside the shirt for reasons of safety.
Incursions and Excursions
For reasons of identification and safety, all students are required to wear full school uniform when attending incursions at the school and when leaving the school grounds on excursions.
Sports Days
On designated Sports Days, students are required to wear their full school uniform and appropriate athletic sneakers or sports shoes. Thongs, sandals or bare feet are not permitted.
Free Dress Days
Menzies Community School holds one Free Dress Day per term. Free Dress Days are a privilege, and students are expected to dress in a manner that is respectful and appropriate to a school setting. Clothing must not display any inappropriate, offensive or disrespectful wording, slogans, imagery or symbols, and must still be safe and suitable for school activities. All other general requirements regarding hair, footwear, jewellery and make-up continue to apply. Free Dress Days will be communicated to families in advance through the school newsletter.
Exemptions
Exemptions to the dress code may be granted by the principal on the grounds of religious, cultural or medical requirements, or other exceptional circumstances. Requests must be made in writing to the principal.
